Barcelona FC are Illiterate

Before I get a load of abuse for being a Real Madrid fan and this obviously being sour grapes as the best team in the World blah blah blah……let me explain.

Barcelona have just done an advertising campaign where the players hold there hands up showing that they are United. The press says that the caption is about Barcelona being Unido.
"Una polémica campaña publicitaria en la que participan Puyol, Xavi, Valdés, Busquets y Villa nos recuerda que en apenas 18 días se van a disputar cuatro clásicos. La famosa 'manita' empapela los autobuses de Barcelona. Los jugadores muestran la palma de su mano y juntando todas ellas se puede leer la palabra 'units' (unidos) en clara referencia al 5-0 de la primera vuelta de la Liga" - Marca

Now I am not Vaughan, but then neither am I Michael Robinson when it comes to the Spanish language.

Units are Unidades. They are individuals. Unidos is United!!!

  1. "Units" in this case means "united". The advert isn't in Spanish nor English, it's in Catalan.

    So: "Unidos is Units!"

  2. OK, So of the 7.5MM residents of Cataluña, FC Barcelona took the smart marketing decision to exclude 2MM who do not speak Catalan.

Great marketing guys. Whats next? Car brochures in braille?

  3. I bet the marketing campaign is only for Cataluña. I give you 500 € for every time that you see that advert in Madrid.

And by the way, I'm not from Cataluña and I don't live there, and I know what units mean. I guess non Catalan speakers in Cataluña also know it.

  4. It probably is only for Cataluña, but that still excludes a fair percentage.

I am Welsh and no self respecting multimillion pound company (such as FC Barcelona) would advertise in Welsh, even if it was only a postcard n Cardiff town centre!

The idea of sports isto be inclusive, not exclusive. to make all Spanish and even overseas people feel welcome to be fans, members, socios etc. Not to exclude those that don't speak a local dialect.

  5. Correction. Sorry, Catalan is a language not a dialect,,,,similar to Welsh.
